RESUMO A couve (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) é geralmente produzida por agricultores urbanos no Brasil, mas existem poucos estudos sobre a diversidade e manejo das doenças para produção sustentável em cultivos urbanos. Neste estudo, foi verificada a ocorrência de doenças na couve em cultivos urbanos de duas regiões do Brasil, representando as condições climáticas de Cwa (Lavras MG) e Aw (Campina Grande PB) pela classificação de Köppen Geiger e os fatores que contribuem para a ocorrência das enfermidades. Os produtores foram visitados semanalmente em cada região por oito meses e foi realizado o levantamento das doenças, bem como as principais táticas de manejo aplicadas pelos agricultores de cada município. Em ambas as regiões, o oídio (Erysiphe polygoni) e a podridão negra (Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris) foram as doenças predominantes. A umidade relativa e alta temperatura foram os fatores ambientais que contribuíram para o aumento das doenças. O manejo com cobertura vegetal contribuiu para diminuir o oídio e para manter a podridão negra. Consequentemente, o cultivo intensivo de couve proporcionou um aumento da severidade da podridão negra. Esses resultados mostram a importância de recomendações adequadas de táticas de manejo utilizadas na agricultura urbana visando o controle de doenças da couve de acordo com as condições climáticas da área.

ABSTRACT Kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is mostly produced by urban growers in Brazil, but little is known about the diversity and the management of diseases for sustainable urban agriculture. The present study investigated the occurrence of diseases in the urban cultivation of kale in two regions of Brazil, representing the climate conditions Cwa (Lavras - MG) and Aw (Campina Grande - PB) according to Köppen Geiger classification, as well as the factors that contribute to such occurrence. Growers in each region were visited every week during eight months while a survey was carried out on the diseases and the major crop management practices. In both regions, powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni) and black rot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris) were the prevalent diseases. Relative humidity and high temperature were the environmental factors that contributed to increase the diseases. Management using straw mulch favored powdery mildew reduction and black rot maintenance. Consequently, kale intensive production resulted in higher black rot severity. These results demonstrated the importance of proper recommendations on management practices for urban agriculture with the aim of controlling kale diseases according to the climate conditions in the region.

RESUMO A ramulose (Colletotrichumgossypii var. cefalosporioides) é uma importante doença do algodão no Brasil cujo controle depende do uso de químicos. Portanto, práticas alternativas para o manejo sustentável da doença são cada vez mais necessárias. Esse trabalho objetivou verificar o potencial de três isolados bacterianos: Bacillusamyloliquefaciens (UFLA285), Bacillusvelezensis (UFLA401) e Paenibacilluslentimorbus (MEN2) no controle de ramulose em algodoeiro. Três métodos de aplicação (tratamento de sementes (TS), pulverização foliar e aplicação no solo foram testados (separadamente ou combinados) em casa de vegetação e no campo. Fungicidas químicos e água foram usados como controles. Em casa de vegetação todos os isolados reduziram a severidade da ramulose, sendo que os isolados B. velezensis UFLA401 e P. lentimorbus MEN2 reduziram em 56.6% e 45.7%, respectivamente, independente do modo de aplicação. O isolado B.amyloliquefaciens UFLA285 reduziu a severidade em 62.1% pela pulverização foliar ou por TS + pulverização foliar. Dois ensaios de campo foram realizados e os três isolados testados reduziram a severidade da doença. No primeiro ano, B. velezensis UFLA401 reduziu a severidade em 22.3% por pulverização foliar e em 57% pot TS + duas pulverizações. A produtividade aumentou para todos os tratamentos comparados ao controle com água. A combinação B. velezensis UFLA401 and P. lentimorbus MEN2 em TS + duas pulverizações foliares aumentou a qualidade da fibra do algodão. Conclui-se que isolados de Bacillus sp. (UFLA285 e UFLA401) e P.lentimorbus MEN2 apresentam potencial para proteger o algodoeiro contra a ramulose e melhorar a produção e qualidade da fibra.

ABSTRACT Ramulosis (Colletotrichum gossypii var. cephalosporioides) is an important fungal disease of cotton in Brazil, exclusively controlled by fungicide application. Therefore, sustainable management of ramulosis is essential. This work aimed to evaluate the potential of three bacterial strains, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (UFLA285), Bacillus velezensis (UFLA401), and Paenibacillus lentimorbus (MEN2), for the biocontrol of ramulosis in cotton and their effects on yield and fiber quality. Seed treatment (ST), foliar spray, and soil drenching application methods were used (separately or combined) under greenhouse and field conditions. Chemical treatments recommended against ramulosis and water were used as controls. Under greenhouse conditions all strains reduced the disease incidence. While B. velezensis UFLA401 and P. lentimorbus MEN2 reduced the incidence by 56.6% and 45.7%, respectively, independent of the application method, B. amyloliquefaciens UFLA285 reduced the disease by about 60% when applied as a foliar spray or ST + foliar spray. Two field trials were performed and all bacterial strains reduced ramulosis incidence. In the first year, B. velezensis UFLA401 sprayed on the plants reduced incidence by 22.3% and ST + two foliar sprays resulted in the best performance, decreasing ramulosis by 57%. In both seasons the yield increased by using either bacterial or chemical treatments compared to the water control. The combination B. velezensis UFLA401 and P. lentimorbus MEN2 sprays provided better fiber quality than chemical treatment. Therefore, Bacillus sp. (UFLA285 and UFLA401) and P. lentimorbus MEN2 are potential tools to reduce ramulosis, increase cotton yield and fiber quality.

ABSTRACT: The incorporation of organic matter to the soil not only improves nutrient content, but also reduces the survival of Stenocarpella, the causal agent of stalk rot, Diplodia ear rot, and grey leaf spot, in maize stubble. We evaluated the effect of organic waste incorporation on Stenocarpella survival in maize stalks, the activity of suppressiveness-related enzymes, and nutrient contents. We conducted the assays in the municipalities of Lavras and Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Maize stalks infested with Stenocarpella were kept in field conditions for three months after poultry litter, swine manure, fish hydrolysate, compost sewage sludge, and urea application. Infested stalks, without residue amendment, were kept on surface or incorporated into the soil, representing negative and positive controls. Stenocarpella concentration in stalks was assessed using qPCR expressed as cycle threshold number. Sewage sludge, buried stalks, and stalks retained on the surface showed reduction of pathogen inoculum. Swine manure and urea did not reduce the quantity of DNA. In the experiment conducted in Lavras, poultry litter stimulated β-glucosidase, urease and hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate activities when compared to the negative control. Sewage sludge, poultry litter, and swine manure increased Ca in the soil by 44 %, 38 % and 36 %, respectively, in the experiment conducted in Lavras. Poultry litter increased Ntotal three months after application. The results indicate that organic wastes are promising in improving nutrient content, activity of hydrolysis-related enzymes, but Stenocarpella inoculum dynamics should be taken into consideration when deciding on the specific organic amendment.

ABSTRACT: Fungal endophytes of Brachiaria, a nonhost of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, may harbor species with antagonistic effects against this plant pathogen. The objective of this work was to investigate the diversity of endophytic fungi associated with different Brachiaria species and hybrids and evaluate their potential to inhibit the plant pathogen S. sclerotiorum. Stem samples from 39 Brachiaria spp. plants were collected in pasture fields and experimental areas of three states of Brazil resulting in 74 endophytes isolated. Twenty-eight species were identified by sequences of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) and 18S rDNA regions. Paraconiothyrium sp. was the most abundant endophyte, accounting for 24 % (14 isolates) of total, and it was isolated from B. ruziziensis, B. decumbens, B. humidicola, and B. brizantha. Phoma sorghina was the second most abundant taxon, followed by Sarocladium strictum, and Plenodomus sp. In vitro analyses showed that Paraconiothyrium sp., Sarocladium kiliense, Acremonium curvulum, Setophoma terrestris, Dissoconium sp., and Cladosporium flabelliforme exhibited antagonistic activity against S. sclerotiorum, with percentages of growth inhibition ranging from 25 to 60 (p < 0.05). Paraconiothyrium sp. BBXE1 (60 %), BBPB4.1 (60 %), BCMT4.1 (54 %), and S. kiliense (54 %) showed the highest values of Antagonism Percentages (AP). Therefore, fungi with inhibitory activity against S. sclerotiorum such as Paraconiothyrium sp. are naturally endophytic in Brachiaria grasses.

Estresses abióticos interferem nas interações micro-organismo e, mas alguns micro-organismos podem amenizar estes efeitos. Foi investigada a interação entre temperatura e controle biológico da murcha-de-curtobacterium (Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens - Cff) e a capacidade de Bacillus subtilis isolado ALB629 em colonizar plântulas de feijão, inibir o crescimento do patógeno e usar diferentes fontes de nutrientes. B. subtilis ALB629rif, isolado mutante selecionado da população selvagem de ALB629 foi utilizado para rastrear a colonização da planta a 20 e 30ºC. ALB629rif foi detectado apenas nas raízes (10(3,22) UFC g-1) na menor temperatura enquanto que a 30ºC, ALB629rif colonizou as raízes, caules e folhas (10(5.85), 10(4.48) e 10(4.01) UFC g-1), respectivamente. A AACPD foi diferente nas duas temperaturas testadas (p < 0,01). No entanto, a redução da doença obtida pelo tratamento de sementes com ALB629rif foi semelhante de 71% e 75%, respectivamente a 20 e 30ºC (p < 0,01). Uma maior eficiência de utilização de fontes de C e N foi observada na temperatura mais elevada, mas o antagonista igualmente inibiu o crescimento de Cff in vitro em qualquer temperatura. Portanto, a temperatura interfere na colonização da planta pelo patógeno e pelo antagonista, mas a supressão da murcha-de-curtabacterium de modo geral parece ser estabilizado por ALB629.

Abiotic stress interferes with plant-microbial interactions, but some microorganisms may buffer this interference. We investigated the interaction between temperature and bacterial wilt (Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens - Cff) biocontrol and the ability of Bacillus subtilis strain ALB629 to colonize bean seedlings, to inhibit pathogen growth and to use different C and N sources. B. subtilis ALB629rif, a mutant selected from the wild population of ALB629, was used to monitor plant colonization at 20°C and 30°C. ALB629rif was detected only in the plant roots (10(3.22) CFU g-1) at the lower temperature but colonized the roots, stems, and leaves (10(5.85), 10(4.48), and 10(4.01) CFU g-1), respectively, at 30ºC. The area under the disease progress curve was also different at the two tested temperatures (p < 0.01). Nevertheless, the disease reduction using ALB629rif - treated seeds was similar: 71% and 75%, respectively, at 20 and 30ºC (p < 0.01). A higher efficiency of C and N source utilization was observed at the higher temperature, but the antagonist inhibited Cff growth equally at either temperature in vitro. Based on our results, temperature interferes with pathogen and antagonist plant colonization, but the overall suppression of bacterial wilt appears to be stabilized by ALB629.

As micotoxinas são produzidas pelo metabolismo secundário de várias espécies de fungos e podem ser encontradas em quase 25% das commodities agrícolas. Esses compostos são tóxicos a humanos, animais e plantas e, portanto, esforços para evitar a contaminação de micotoxinas em alimentos e rações devem ser feitos. Além disso, até 25% das frutas e legumes em pós-colheita são perdidos em decorrência do ataque de fungos de armazenamento e/ou contaminações por micotoxinas. Vários métodos têm sido aplicados para mitigar os problemas de micotoxinas, mas a maioria deles se baseia no uso de fungicidas. Embora os produtos químicos sejam, muitas vezes, a primeira estratégia de defesa contra fungos micotoxigênicos, o uso indiscriminado de fungicidas vem despertando a percepção pública, em razão de seus efeitos nocivos sobre o meio ambiente e à saúde humana/animal. Assim, existe uma crescente pressão pública em busca de alternativas mais segura e não nocivas ao meio ambiente para controlar estes organismos. Nesse contexto, o controle biológico utilizando antagonistas microbianos, tais como bactérias, fungos e leveduras têm mostrado ser um substituto viável para reduzir a utilização de produtos químicos. Apesar dos resultados positivos, usando os agentes de controle biológico, poucos produtos apenas foram registrados e estão comercialmente disponíveis para controlar fungos produtores de micotoxinas. Esta revisão traz estratégias de controle biológico para evitar ou reduzir danos em commodities agrícolas causadas por fungos de armazenamento e a contaminação de alimentos e rações por micotoxinas.

Mycotoxins are produced by the secondary metabolism of many fungi and can be found in almost 25% of the world's agricultural commodities. These compounds are toxic to humans, animals, and plants and therefore, efforts should be made to avoid mycotoxin contamination in food and feed. Besides, up to 25% of all harvested fruits and vegetables are lost due to storage molds and/or mycotoxin contamination and many methods have been applied to mitigate these issues, but most of them rely on the use of fungicides. Although chemicals are often the first defensive line against mycotoxigenic fungi, the indiscriminate use of fungicides are awakening the public perception due to their noxious effects on the environment and human/animal health. Thus, there is an increasing public pressure for a safer and eco-friendly alternative to control these organisms. In this background, biological control using microbial antagonists such as bacteria, fungi and yeasts have been shown to be a feasible substitute to reduce the use of chemical compounds. Despite of the positive findings using the biocontrol agents only a few products have been registered and are commercially available to control mycotoxin-producing fungi. This review brings about the up-to-date biological control strategies to prevent or reduce harvested commodity damages caused by storage fungi and the contamination of food and feed by mycotoxins.
